The Royal Philatelic Society London offered something different during Stampex when, on Friday, 24 October, all were welcomed at its premises at 15 Abchurch Lane, London EC4N 7BW to enjoy a remarkable study of the Great Britain Machin definitives by Stephen McGill, FRPSL.
The displays in the frames featured three of the Machin collections formed by Steve, one of which won the Grand Prix National at EuroPhilEx Birmingham 2025.
To complement his displays, Steve gave a presentation in two parts. The first looked at the development of postal mechanisation in the United Kingdom from the experimental use of the Transorma equipment in Brighton from 1935 to 1968 to the automation of today, including the introduction of post codes and the modern use of Post & Go machines.
In the second half Steve explained how the Machin definitives present a modern philatelic challenge with over 7,000 variations catalogued. He provided an overview of the changes that have embraced printers and printing, colours, papers, phosphor, gum and security features.
Steve was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by President of the Society, Simon Richards RDP, FRPSL.
