From mail carried by balloon to the time of the Spanish Civil War, Eduardo Consejo guided members of the Royal Philatelic Society London through ‘Airmail Related to Spain 1870-1936’ by means of a display and presentation on 20 March. The evolution of airmail relating to Spain was told through pieces flown to and from the country, but also flown from and to territories with a clear connection to Spain.

It had been a ‘fantastic, erudite presentation’ commented Gwynne Harries FRPSL giving the Vote of Thanks. Gwynne added that he found particularly fascinating the ‘Ballons Montés’, Eduardo having no fewer than 37 items of mail addressed to Spanish destinations sent out by ballon during the Siege of Paris from September 1870 to January 1871.

The presentation had shown how airmail developed while facing many challenges and, although we still depend on airmail today, once provided a speedier service.

Eduardo was presented with the Society’s plaquette by its President, Simon Richards RDP, FRPSL.
