‘Sensational’ was how Jack Zhang FRPSL described the display of ‘China: 300 Years of Decline, Struggle and Revival’ given by Danny Kin Chi Wong FRPSL to the Royal Philatelic Society London on 21 November. Giving the Vote of Thanks, Jack added that it had been a ‘lifetime opportunity to see this amazing collection with so many fabulous items’.
Every frame on display was filled with incredible covers and letters, ranging from the Imperial Courier Post of 1644 to 1912, up to the unification of Hong Kong on 30 June 1997 and of Macao on 20 December 1999.
A comment was made on the stunning condition of the early material, some 300 years old, evidence of the quality of the paper used. Danny explained that paper made from a poisonous grass had been used to resist insects and hence it has endured.
Presenting Danny with the Society’s certificate and plaquette, Simon Richards FRPSL, Vice President of the Society, added that it has been an ‘absolute pleasure to see such amazing, outstanding material, covering a wealth of topics relating to Chinese philately’.
