Members of the Royal Philatelic Society London were treated to several ‘firsts’ at the display and presentation given by Stefan Heijtz FRPSL on ‘The Postal History of the Faroe Islands 1751-1945’ on 3 April.

Shown was the earliest known example of mail from the islands, sent by Johann Michael Eberhardt of Thorshavn to the Cammer-Collegio (part of the Ministry of Finance) in Copenhagen on 13 September 1751. Sent on 8 April 1796, included was the earliest known letter into the islands from Denmark, namely Copenhagen, to Trade Manager Hammershaimb, Thorshavn. Also the earliest known letter to the Faroe Islands from outside Denmark, sent from Leith in Scotland on 8 June 1811. And the earliest known ‘Registered’ letter sent from Copenhagen to Merchant M. H. Mörck, Thorshavn on 31 March 1812.

‘A large proportion of what is known of the early postal history has been shown’ commented Paul Farrimond giving the Vote of Thanks, adding that it is ‘scarce and exceedingly rare’. Such an extensive collection with top quality material will not be bettered.

Stefan was presented with the Society’s plaquette by its President, Simon Richards RDP, FRPSL.
