Der Monat Mai hat uns verschiedene interessante Briefmarkenausgaben von POST Luxembourg beschert.

May issues by POST Luxembourg

This is far from being POST Luxembourg’s first stamp on this theme: since the first European elections in 1979, the Grand Duchy has been promoting these elections, which are very important for all citizens of the European Union. The stamp is and remains a popular and inexpensive means of communication. It is therefore important for governments to choose their themes carefully to keep their citizens informed.

This is the spirit behind the stamp commemorating 50 years of SOS Children’s Village International. With 50 years of support, the Luxembourg branch of SOS Children’s Village International has been placed under the patronage of H.R.H. the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg and benefits from a great deal of financial and political support within the Grand Duchy for the good of children in many countries around the world who are experiencing difficulties.

Luxembourg also uses its philately to pay tribute to art, and in this issue two very different forms of art are presented. Firstly, conventional art with a tribute to the 125th anniversary of the birth of the painter Jean-Pierre Beckius through a self-portrait depicted on this new Luxembourg stamp. Next, art in literature with a stamp honouring the author and poet Auguste Liesch and his famous ‘D’Maus Ketti’ (la souris Ketti in French), drawn by Pierre Blanc. This adaptation of Aesop’s work tells the well-known tale of the city rat and the country rat!

POST Luxembourg is also maintaining continuity with two issues, the third and final ‘Space Ressources’ stamp on the theme of Asteroid Day and the EUROPA competition stamps on the theme of underwater flora and fauna. Each year, European Posts issue one or two stamps on a specific theme covering different European countries. As part of this tradition, which began in the 1950s, two original stamps depicting prehistoric marine animals have been issued.

All the stamps in this issue are available in the POST Luxembourg online stamp shop.

If you’d rather see older issues of the EUROPA competition or the European elections, for example, you can find them on Delcampe!
