Press release from RPSL

The life of a much-loved King

By means of an incredible display and presentation, Daphne E. McMillan FRPSL inspired members of The Royal Philatelic Society London at a meeting on 20 February with a look at the life, reign and family of King George VI.

Through a mixture of photographs, postcards, letters, stamps and covers, the story was told of this much loved King, born on 14 December 1895 and christened Albert, who, perhaps reluctantly, came to the Throne in 1936 following the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII. Soon after he had to inspire the nation through the years of the Second World War. His life proved too short, dying on 6 February 1952.

Daphne’s display also traced the life of King George VI’s grandfather, King Edward VII, through an array of fascinating postcards.

Giving the Vote of Thanks, Graham Winters FRPSL expressed how much he had enjoyed the fine presentation, adding that ‘postcards are almost always attractive’.

Daphne was presented with the Society plaquette and a certificate of appreciation from Vice-President Simon Martin-Redman FRPSL.
