If the name doesn't ring a bell, that's not surprising, but if you're a photography fanatic, you should recognize it, because the Reutlinger studio has taken some pretty good shots.
To start with in the family, I ask for the uncle! Charles Reutlinger (1816-
1888). Always interested in photography, he gained his first experience as a photographer in Stuttgart until 1850, when he moved to Paris. It was here that he created the photographic studio that bears his name.
When he died in 1888, his brother Emile Reutlinger took over the business, before handing it over to his son Léopold-Emile Reutlinger, who also photographed many models in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Born on March 17, 1863 in the Peruvian town of Calao, Léopold-Emile Reutlinger has been immersed in photography since his earliest childhood.
The studio’s specialty was portraits, and the family’s models included such well-known names as Mata-Hari, Sarah Bernhardt and Cléo de Mérode. But also many anonymous people who wished to keep a pleasant souvenir!
More than 1,000 portraits from the Reutlinger studio are on sale at Delcampe, and are sure to delight collectors. Come and discover them!
