‘Aspects of Great Britain Postal History before 1840’ was the title of the display given by Peter Chadwick FRPSL to the members of the Royal Philatelic Society London on 23 November. What was on show was an incredible array of material from the Bishop Marks up to the introduction of Uniform Fourpenny Post in December 1839.
‘Absolutely fantastic’ was how President of the Society, Michael Roberts FRPSL, described the display, sentiments echoed by Greg Spring FRPSL giving the Vote of Thanks. Greg added that Peter is ‘a fount of knowledge’ and ‘a great detective’ who had carefully discovered the background to the material shown, thereby making ‘an incredible contribution to the postal history of Great Britain’.
In reply, Peter revealed that he had been a collector for 77 years, having decided in 2006 to concentrate solely on postal history. He thanked Michael Roberts for the opportunity to show his collection and for all the help he had received from the staff at the ‘Royal’.
