It was on 4 August 1891 that Dominique Piazza had the idea of replacing an illustration with a picture on a postcard. His aim was to save money by sending a photo of Marseille to a friend in Argentina.
It was the beginning of a great success story. Since 1891, millions of picture postcards have been exchanged around the world. They are of all known places and monuments. They are all testimonies of the past that have come down to us.
