Press release from RPSL

Filling all the available frames at the Royal Philatelic Society London on 29 January with his display of ‘Denmark, the United Kingdom, and Mail across the North Sea’, Chris King RDP, Hon FRPSL demonstrated how much enjoyment and satisfaction can be achieved from a postal history study. The display embraced not only superb entire letters, wrappers and envelopes, but much more of interest including maps, engravings and official decrees.

Chris supplemented his material with a presentation during which he explained that there is so much more to postal history than the study of rates, routes and modes of transportation. Every single item hides a fascinating story that can only be uncovered by careful research. Naturally for years international mail had to be carried across the sea, but how many take advantage of the newspaper archives to learn more about each sailing? What effects did local geography, political situations and postal conventions have on the carriage of mail? Chris offered much food for thought.

It had been a ‘marvellous display and presentation’ commented Susan Taylor FRPSL giving the Vote of Thanks. Chris had not only shared his extensive collection, but also added a few extra sidelines, such as a look at Copenhagen Telephone Kiosks, Telegrams and the bicoloured postage stamps of Denmark.
