Dr Philip Levine FRPSL had travelled from Australia to present his magnificent display of Gold Coast to the members of the Royal Philatelic Society London on 4 December.

Divided into six sections, the display began with the issues of the reigns of Queen Victoria and King Edward VII shown in a traditional way, with studies of the stamps, including many rare and outstanding items such as essays and proofs, with usage demonstrated by fine covers. There followed studies of the postal stationery, with a separate section devoted to air letters. Next came postal history from the reign of King George VI, and finally mail from the Asante Wars fought between Great Britain and the rich and powerful Asante tribes in the forested interior of Gold Coast. In fact, that was not quite all – also shown were postcards of Gold Coast sold from the country’s pavilion at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1924 and 1925.

Giving the Vote of Thanks, Mike Smith FRPSL commented how the climatic conditions in Gold Coast affected the condition of items, making it difficult to collect such fine material as seen in the display. In reply Philip said he had been proud to show at the Society, and thoroughly enjoyed the day. He was presented with the Society’s plaquette by its President, Simon Richards RDP, FRPSL.
